4 Ways Your Air Conditioner May Break Down This Summer

Posted by Howell's Heating & Air on May 31, 2021

Why do air conditioners break when its hotDid you ever have to call in emergency AC repair technicians in Henrico County because your air conditioner frequently breaks down during summertime? If so, you know full-well how frustrating it can be to deal with an unreliable AC when it’s hot outside.

The good news is, by properly preparing your AC for summer and using the correct settings during the hotter months, you can catch most of these malfunctions on time and keep your air conditioner running smoothly throughout the cooling season. Read on.

Why do air conditioners break when it's hot?

There are countless problems that can cause an AC to overheat, become significantly less efficient, or otherwise fail during a heatwave. To prevent these problems, you should schedule annual maintenance for your AC and occasionally give it a visual inspection to make sure everything is as it should be.

Always be on the lookout for these 4 air conditioner problems:

Leaking refrigerant

Air conditioners use refrigerant to extract humidity and heat from indoor air. A leak in an AC’s refrigerant lines will cause it to lose refrigerant and be unable to efficiently cool your home. In addition to making you less comfortable, this will also cause additional wear on your AC. If you suspect this issue, contact a reliable HVAC company ASAP.

Dirty condenser coils

The exterior unit in most ACs contains condenser coils that are used to expel warm air out of your home. Debris, grime, and dust can all build up inside these coils and cause them to become clogged, causing your AC to work harder, wear down faster, and may even lead to overheating.

Regularly cleaning your air conditioner and making sure there’s enough clearance between the outdoor unit and any nearby vegetation, trash, and other items will go a long way toward keeping your AC healthy and efficient.

Frozen evaporator coils

A problematic air conditioner can develop an ice buildup even in the middle of July. This will usually cause it to stop blowing cold air (or any air at all).

Common causes of this problem include:

  • Refrigerant running low
  • Fan problems
  • Malfunctioning thermostat
  • Lack of airflow
  • Blocked filters
  • Blocked or closed ducts and vents

Malfunctioning fans

Most air conditioners contain two fans. One of them expels warm air by blowing it over the condenser coils, while the other blows indoor air over the evaporator coil. If either one of these fans stops working or works incorrectly, your AC will start receiving too little (or too much) airflow. This can result in severe problems, up to and including a damaged compressor.

Why does my AC break every summer?

Air conditioners contain multiple moving parts that are constantly exposed to weather extremes, temperature fluctuations, and dust, dirt, and debris buildup. During summer, all of these components need to work extra hard to keep up with the high temperatures.

While regular maintenance can greatly extend your AC’s service life, normal wear will eventually cause it to become inefficient or even fail completely. If your air conditioner is 10-15 years old (or older), replacing it with a newer, more energy-efficient model is usually a better investment than spending more money on repairs.
