Which is the most efficient heating system?

When it comes to heating your house, you have 4 basic choices: boilers, furnaces, heat pumps, and geothermal systems. Picking the option that best fits your particular situation allows you to get both efficiency and excellent heating all year round.

Consider the following:

Furnaces

Furnaces use oil, electricity, LP or natural gas to heat air and distribute it throughout your home. As the heated air cools inside the rooms, it's then pulled back into the furnace and heated again.

Efficiency ratings can vary widely from furnace to furnace, so you'll need to make sure your furnace of choice is an efficient one. As a general rule, oil and electric furnaces tend to be the least efficient and costly to operate options. If your goal is to maximize efficiency, natural gas is almost always the way to go.

Just keep in mind that fuel isn't priced the same everywhere. Some fuels may be more or less expensive in your area than they are elsewhere, so take that into consideration when choosing your HVAC system.

Heat pumps

Heat pumps are an extremely energy-efficient heating solution. They operate by drawing the heat from the outdoor air and transferring it to the interior air in your house. However, this type of heating becomes inefficient once the temperatures drop below freezing/32 degrees , which is why many heat pumps also have an electric or gas backup heat..

Geothermal heat pumps utilize the same basic approach, but they draw heat from underground because the temperature tends to stay constant there. They're by far the most efficient option as they don't spend any fuel except some electricity.

Boilers

Boilers tend to be very beneficial for your indoor air quality because they heat the air in your  home by using heated water or  steam through radiators. That being said, while boilers tend to provide great heat especially in older homes they're more labor intensive to install and take more time to heat a home.
