How to Choose The Right Heat Pump for You

Posted by Howell's Heating & Air on July 03, 2017

Carrier Two HVAC UnitsLiving in Central Virginia means you get all four seasons; and as beautiful as the weather is, it’s also important to keep the temperature of your home comfortable without costing you a fortune.

Luckily for you, that’s where a heat pump comes in!

With this broad range of temperatures a heat pump is considerably more cost effective than cooling and heating your home separately with a furnace and air conditioning unit. The key is to pick the right size unit.

  • Choosing one too big can waste energy and still not heat or cool your home effectively - and bigger isn’t always better.
  • Choosing a heating and cooling system too small can mean your still aren’t efficiently, or effectively, heating or cooling your home.

Our easy chart below can help you with the bigger question - which heat pump is most appropriate for your home?

While some older systems use freon, or R22, newer greener systems utilize puron, Genetron and other environmentally friendly refrigerants.

The SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) and HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) are the two most frequently used measures of a heating and cooling system’s performance.

Put simply; SEER measures how efficiently it cools and HSPF measure how efficiently your HVAC system heats - the higher the scores the more efficient your heat pump is. Understanding each category will help you make the most informed decision for your home.
